The Ultimate Pet Food Guide
Posted on 28. May, 2008 by Keri in Books

After the scary pet food recall in 2007, a lot of us have been left wondering what’s actually in the food our pets eat. Liz Palika, a writer for pet publications since 1985, breaks it down for us in this amazingly informative book, The Ultimate Pet Food Guide.
In this book, Palika walks you through the basics of the digestive systems of dogs and cats, nutrition, supplements, and raw food diets. It also includes a section of recipes depending on your dogs special needs (frankly, the recipes looked good as human food, too).
It’s an interesting read, and one that will help you make an informed decision about your dog’s diet for a happier, healthier bow-wowser. Yes, I said bow-wowser.

Great adviceāI will definitely try some of this with my Westie, Mr. Henry.
One note of caution, though. Some foods that are perfectly safe for humans (like rasins and onions) are toxic to dogs. Read more here: http://urbzen.com/2008/11/11/five-surprising-foods-that-are-poisonous-to-dogs/

Some dogs foods like peanuts are super harmful and others aren’t, it’s weird.

Books like these bring to light messages that pet owners need to read. They don’t always “hear” them or appreciate these messages from their friends.
A word of caution to pet owners who select their foods based on some Top Ten List compiled by people that just go by a list of ingredients. Foods can have the same ingredients but be totally different in nutritional value based on how it is cooked and the quality of the ingredients.
Check out the integrity of the company by speaking with the company owner and pet product formulator. That’s what I did.

It looks like a good book. I’ll have to look it up. Still, I’m not sure I’d want to eat the food myself.

We’ve had success with both Newman’s Own and Halo. Both are excellent companies.

The pet food recall in 2007 totally freaked me out and made me crazy about reading all of the labels on my dog’s food! I have always been a fan of Newman’s Own, as well as many of his other regular food products.

The basic notion when thinking about feeding you dog should be to reduce preservatives, watch salt and purchase reduced fat. View DoggieMarts list of foods that should not be eaten on their blog at http://blog.doggiemart.com.au/post/Is-there-anything-that-I-should-not-feed-my-dog.aspx

I have been feeding my dogs Nitro Dog food brand. They love it and its not that much more expensive. I get them at farm supply stores.
I used to feed them Ole Roy but got away from that.

I have used several different high end dog foods. The one that I have had the best results from is Life’s Abundance. It has never been re-called.

Just got this book for Christmas and it’s great! Not sure I agree with all she says about raw food, but overall it’s got some great advice on making your own food. I would give it four and a half out of five stars.
