Six months without Bliss
Posted on 24. Jul, 2010 by Keri in Dog Bliss News, Uncategorized
It’s been a little over six months since we lost Bliss.
Some of her toys are still here (I’m looking at them now), there’s a big box of unused food and product samples in the garage (they’re headed to a charity, I promise), and I’m still sweeping errant tufts of cottony fluff from corners and under furniture.
I made egg salad today and expected her to come running in when I tapped the eggs on the counter (eggs were her favorite). If I drop a bit of food on the floor, my first thought is still, “Bliss will get that.” I still find myself lunging to close the door when my horrible cooking sets off the smoke detector because she’d tremble for an hour whenever it went off.
I miss her. I go for morning walks, but it seems so stupid. What’s the point of going for a walk without a dog? I’m working from home a lot these days, and there’s no one to talk to, and no fluffball sighing at my feet. And coming in the front door without her telling the whole neighborhood about it just seems… anticlimactic.
Friends and relatives ask me if we’re going to get another dog. I had a dream about a week ago in which my husband asked me to bring the dog in. I started calling for Bliss. He said, “Oh, no, honey. We don’t have her anymore. She died.” He gave me the name of our new dog. I sobbed, “But I don’t know how to call for another dog!” Clearly, I haven’t finished grieving for her and I’m apparently not ready for another dog.
I’ve received some very nice emails advising me to consider starting this blog again. You all are very kind. But the thing is, I don’t have a dog. I’m not a pet owner any longer. I don’t buy dog products, I don’t look at pet blogs, I don’t walk down the pet supply aisles in grocery stores. So really, how qualified am I to continue this blog? How compelling is it for you to read a site called “My Dog Bliss” if there is no Bliss?
But when the site came up for renewal a couple of weeks ago, I renewed it. And I’m here throwing words on a page for whomever might see it. And I know, someday, I’ll get another dog. I can’t imagine life without one.
But for now, I don’t know how to call for another dog.

A time will come when you will be ready for a new dog. And if that time comes, you can get a dog that would again take your heart away. Getting a new dog won’t really be a problem. There are about 40 dog breeds according to http://www.trainpetdog.com. There is one that would really fit you. For now, just express your grief and let time heal the wound.

It will not only help you through this time, but be beneficial to those of us who recently discovered your site and mourn with you as we mourn the passing of our own four-legged friends.

I stumbled on a post you wrote from May 09 (…”in which I answer…questions about my dog). I enjoyed reading the article and clicked to see if there were newer posts. I was so saddened to read about Bliss. I was lucky to grow up with four Keeshonds and now have an almost 15 month old Kees who was sitting next to me on the sofa as I read the new posts, anxious as to why I suddenly had tears streaming down my face. She is the dog I never imagined having–my grief when we lost our 4th 5 years ago was too, too much. Now I can’t imagine life without her. Families who lose pets know that it really is like any other family member: the loss never goes away, but it does get easier with time. You are so fortunate to have experienced the unconditional love of a Keeshond. Hang in there.

I wanted to show a colleague an example of a relevant blog for a point I was making, and thought of your site Keri. It made me nostalgic to see your post. I still remember Felix and Chris showing me the gigantic dog treat they had got Bliss when you left. I wish for you continued happy memories of Bliss…and I believe it will be a good day when you can call for another dog again.

I hurt for your loss and the pain that lingers. My father-in-law was unable to overcome his grief and got the same kind of dog and named him the same name. That was healing for him and he grew to love his new dog, Banjo, as much as the former Banjo. You do whatever you need to do to heal and find the joy of life again.

I have been there, and know exalcally what you have been going through. One of the hardest things I have dealt with is the loss of a beloved pet. The last dog I lost was a male lab named Red, he also had cancer, in his stomach. He was my daughters first experience with losing a dog. We grieved for a year, then adopted two shelter dogs, filling that hole in our hearts. The memories will always be there, but we have to keep offering our love and adopting if we can.

It’s always going to hurt, and nothing is ever going to replace Bliss — but I hope you do get another dog, in time, when your heart can bear it. Because it’s not just about what you get, but what you give — and the love you gave to Bliss could make some other dog happy, too. Be well.

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your beloved bliss. I work at Amber Technology and we talk to hundreds of people that are trying to treat their dogs with parvo and other life threatening diseases. And i have to say that its a blessing to hear about the relationship that you and bliss had. there are hundreds of people whos pets die from sicknesses but your blog, your blog can remind people how amazing it is to have a pet. you might not have be ready for another pet, and i understand she was truly your best friend. But you can stand as a model and an example for people who are looking for a dog! im not going to lie i love reading things that just touch my heart and your site has done that. please keep writing, you may not be buying food or toys, or going to the vet or buying health essentials for your pet but this was a passion you had and are good at i love your site! please keep writing!

So sorry to hear of your loss. I echo the comments made by a previous poster – you have a great blog and I’d encourage you to keep it running.
For what it’s worth, I’ve lost beloved dogs in the past and the pain does subside over time. I always thought I would not get another dog after each one passed away, but eventually would run into a pup at someone’s house and we’d connect and I’d take it home with me.
Dogs are God’s gift to humans and I believe life is better with them in our lives. Perhaps when the time is right you’ll cross paths with a dog that is meant to enrich your life in the same manner as your beloved Bliss did.
Best of luck to you!

I completely understand what you are going through. I lost my 17 1/2 year old Dachshund in December 2009 and I still have her clothes, leash, etc. Even though we have two other dogs, there will never be a dog that replaces her. She is missed daily but eventually, it does get easier. Keep writing your blog, it is a great way to keep her memory alive

I just found this blog so I never “knew” Bliss. I lost my St. Bernard a year ago. Still finding drool on the ceiling
. I had two dogs, and the maltipoo was a comfort but when you’re used to having a 150+ pound dog around, you really miss it. So I got a new puppy two months ago. I love her, but it hasn’t helped the pain like everyone said it would. With me being stressed and sleep-deprived it probably made matters worse (at least until she grows up)… Don’t let others tell you what to do. Your heart will know.

TO BLISS…
A Dog for Jesus
(Where dogs go when they die)
I wish someone had given Jesus a dog.
As loyal and loving as mine.
To sleep by His manger and gaze in His eyes
And adore Him for being divine.
As our Lord grew to manhood His faithful dog,
Would have followed Him all through the day.
While He preached to the crowds and made the sick well
And knelt in the garden to pray.
It is sad to remember that Christ went away.
To face death alone and apart.
With no tender dog following close behind,
To comfort its Master’s Heart.
And when Jesus rose on that Easter morn,
How happy He would have been,
As His dog kissed His hand and barked it’s delight,
For The One who died for all men.
Well, the Lord has a dog now, I just sent Him mine,
The old pal so dear to me.
And I smile through my tears on this first day alone,
Knowing they’re in eternity.
Day after day, the whole day through,
Wherever my road inclined,
Four feet said, “Wait, I’m coming with you!”
And trotted along behind.

I just lost my Aussie last month. She was 16. My other dogs mourn for her as do I. Still, when I get my dogs together to go out I always take a half second to leash Belle and she’s not there, then I remember she’s gone. They are such amazing creatures that God provided for us. Just wanted to let you know I stumbled across your blog and my family and I understand what you are going through. Best Wishes

I feel so sorry for the lost of your dog..
Me myself if I’m gonna lose my only Eurie, I don’t really know what to do.. But I guess that’s life, even people just come and go. We have to move on and we have to embrace the fact that there are reasons why that dog was taken away from you, I mean you know what I mean. God bless you Keri! I wish Bliss would just play in your front yard one morning, and I’m sure that it will be the happiest moment of your life. Sad story but such a great blog!

Keri, I was deeply saddened to visit your blog today (after a long absence) and learn of Bliss’ passing. You have my sincerest sympathies. My last Kees lived to be 15 years, 4 months before we had to make “the decision”. It was the hardest thing I have ever done and it took me a long time to go through a day without crying. I still tear up when I think about her or read about others going through the same thing. I understand how hard it is to go for walks or be alone at home and not have your four-legged companion by your side.
By coincidence, we actually have something in common — my last two Kees (out of three) have been from Kemont Keeshonden in Claremont. My husband and I got another Kees from there 10 months after our beloved Tieneke died. His name is Rocky and he has been a joy. So, my hope for you is that some day you will arrive at that place where you are ready to open your heart to another furry friend. Bliss will always be with you in spirit just as Tieneke is always with me. I wish you the best.

I just ran into your blog. Just wanted to say that it was nice. If you decide to get a dog in future and restart the blog I will look forward to reading it. If you ever feel the need to blog again, you can always write one about mourning for lost animals. You have a gift for words and could use your experience to help others with similar loss. Again sorry for your loss.

I got teary eyed reading your blog. You do have a gift for writing and I agree with Sam above. Dogs are so darn special and unless you have one that you love, you just can’t understand it. I currently have a 15 year old maltese named Cupid. She’s been through a lot this year (chemo, surgery, and currently many meds) and I dread the day when she won’t be around. When you talked about all the little things Bliss used to do, I could completely relate. I recently started a blog for my dog and for me, it has been very therapeutic in that it helps me to cherish all the little things we do together and to record into memories. Thank you for sharing your story and I’m so sorry for Bliss being gone. My thoughts are with you.

I totally feel your loss with your dog. I can even feel the sadness while I was reading your blog. I know that it is not that easy, but in time you would slowly realize that you are healing and is capable of loving another dog/pet. I pray that you would be able to overcome the sadness that you feel. I’m sorry that you don’t have Bliss with you. More power!

I so feel your pain! We have always had dogs & cats in our house. When we lost a dog a few years back I loved having another furry friend to turn to and help me through the mourning. In your time, you will know. I found a great social networking site for animal lovers. Great resource and it might help you decide what to do or where to find. This is their Facebook page: http://ow.ly/6k4cp
